Revelers Hope Frankenstorm Won't Dampen Halloween Spirit

Wacky and scary characters are hoping to make an appearance on Halloween if Hurricane Sandy, nicknamed "Frankenstorm" for its timing, doesn't drown out the holiday spirit. Tara Cleary reports.

The ghoulish and the comic - shoppers in New York made a mad dash to snag the creepiest Halloween costumes available. SOUNDBITE: Isabel Wilder, customer, saying (English): "Everyone's out to have a good time and everyone just wants to have the best costume and everyone really takes it seriously, so it's really fun." SOUNDBITE: Jonathan Brenner, customer, saying (English): "I'm being really uncreative and getting everything in a bag and getting this to accompany it." And in an election year, political characters are always popular, says "Halloween Adventure" owner Tony Bianchi. Like children's TV character "Big Bird", whose job is at risk, after presidential candidate Mitt Romney said he will pull government funding for public television if he wins the election. SOUNDBITE: Tony Bianchi, owner, Halloween Adventure, saying (English): "Big Bird sold out in a day. I wish Romney or Obama spoke about some other characters 'cause whatever they speak about, you know, they want to lampoon it." But this year, New Yorkers have another scary character to contend with … 'Frankenstorm'. Category one Hurricane Sandy got the nickname because of its timing - expected to hit the U.S. northeast coast just before Halloween. And revelers hope the storm won't drown out their Halloween spirit.
