Christmas Lights Brighten LA Neighborhood

A Los Angeles neighborhood's holiday lights bring Christmas spirit and plenty of smiles to visitors young and old.

The evening traffic congestion begins along "Candy Cane Lane" in Los Angeles. For the past 50 years residents here have lit up their homes - and the neighborhood - with elaborate Christmas decorations. And for many who've grown up with fond memories of the spectacle, no Christmas is complete without a visit to their favorite light show. SOUNDBITE: Serena Santa Maria of Los Angeles, California, saying (English): "It makes me feel nostalgic. I am the one that wanted to come because, it hasn't really felt like Christmas this year. It just really brings the Christmas spirit." SOUNDBITE: Diane Mendoza of Los Angeles, California, saying (English): "She loves lights, she loves to come every year." SOUNDBITE: Julie Holgoman of Los Angeles, California, saying (English): "Seriously in California, when you have such nice weather you really need the lights, it makes you feel good." Residents go all out to bring a wintrier atmosphere to the city of endless summer. SOUNDBITE: Peter Grossman, homeowner on Candy Cane Lane, saying (English): "You hear the kids driving by and saying "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Holidays" and that is what I do it for. To hear that and see the cheer for the season." SOUNDBITE: Maria Loweski, homeowner on Candy Cane Lane, saying (English): "My grandmother was one of the ones to start it. We do it every year and we drive it almost every night. They love it. My husband puts almost 80-thousand lights for them." And even though the road is called Oxnard Street for 11 months of the year, residents revel in the opportunity to make the holiday season shine on "Candy Cane Lane".
