The US economy added 155,000 jobs in December and the unemployment rate stayed at a revised 7.8 percent, pointing to a lackluster pace of economic growth.

The Daily Digit is 155,000. That's how many more payroll jobs outside the farming sector came about in December, according to the U.S. Labor Department. It was in line with analysts' expectations and slightly below the revised gain of 161,000 reported for November. New jobs popped-up across the economy from manufacturing to construction to health care, in a sign the labor market continues to recover from the recession that ended in 2009. But most economists say it will continue to be slow going or slow growing from here - with the U.S. economy held back by tax hikes this year as well as weak spending by households and businesses still trying to get rid of debt. So, few expect to see big changes in the unemployment rate, which held steady at an upwardly revised 7.8 percent for November and December.
