Bigger, Sharper, Thinner: TVs of the Future at the CES

The 2013 Consumer Electronic Show is underway in Las Vegas. This year, TV screens are once again the center of attention, with innovations that seem to be never-ending. Ultra-high definition is a main feature of many screens.

SCRIPT: If your fingers are tired from pushing the buttons on your remote control, fret no more: with this nifty new TV, all you have to do is blink. It's just one of many improvements to TV on display at the Consumer Electronics Show, where this year the screen is the star. A major trend is ultra-high definition -- also known as 4K -- boasting an image quality 4 times higher than HD. SOUNDBITE 1 Steve Koening (man) Analyst, Consumer Electronic Association (English, 9 sec): "Ultra High Definition is certainly one to watch because the resolution is really compelling and it's actually really required when we get into some of these larger screen sizes." And the televisions of tomorrow aren't just bigger and sharper, they're also thinner. Screens like this one that use technology known as O-L-E-D or OLED can be as little a four millimeters thick. SOUNDBITE 2 Pete Hollenhorst (man) National Product Trainer, LG Electronics (English, 11s) : "For me this has been a very thin phone to be able to use and when you compare this phone currently against the thinness of our TV it's just unparalleled." But sleeker sets could also mean lighter wallets. SOUNDBITE 3 VOX POP (man, English, 4 sec) : "Oh it is very expensive for me, I want to buy this TV but I can't afford to buy that OLED."
