A gunman, thought to be a fugitive ex-cop, trades gunfire with lawmen at a California mountain cabin, killing one before the building burns to the ground.

A cabin burns in California, where police traded fire with a gunman - believed to be a fugitive ex-cop. Officers searching for Christopher Dorner say a gunman barricaded himself inside the building at San Bernardino National Forest. A sheriff's deputy was killed by the gunman, before the cabin burned down. Los Angles police say it's unclear whether anyone died inside the building. SOUNDBITE: (English) LAPD COMMANDER ANDREW SMITH, SAYING: "That cabin is still too hot for anyone to make entry. There has been no body located inside of that cabin. That cabin has not yet been searched because the fire is still too hot, as of five minutes ago, for anybody to go into there. Any reports of a body being found are untrue." Thirty-three-year-old Dorner is accused of waging war on police and their families in a revenge-fuelled killing spree. In a manifesto posted online he claims he lost his L.A. police job unfairly. With the death of the policeman, Dorner is now suspected of killing four people.
