From Makeup to Jewels, Stars Aim to Glow on the Red Carpet

Every starlet who walks the Oscars red carpet wants her moment to be picture-perfect, from gown to hairstyle and everything in between. AFPTV visits celebrity jeweler Neil Lane and sought-after makeup artist Stella Kae to find out what goes into making stars look unforgettable on Oscar night.

SCRIPT: They sparkle, they shine, they're worth hundreds of thousands of dollars -- and every year Hollywood stars borrow these precious pieces on Oscar night. SOUNDBITE 1 Neil Lane (man) jeweler (English, 5 sec): "Octavia Spencer, when she won the Oscar last year, wore those earrings and this ring." Some of the biggest names in showbiz will wear Neil Lane jewels at the 85th Academy Awards, showcasing the brand in front of the cameraS and fans the world over. SOUNDBITE 2 Neil Lane (man) jeweler (English, 11 sec): "It's like a big ad, a big commercial. // Today it is instantaneous. So the you meet people in the Middle East, in France, in Paris, I have clients that call me up, and they may see someone like you know Madonna or Angelina Jolie wearing something." Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but only a star could be trusted to borrow these rocks. The set of jewels worn by Angelina Jolie in 2012 is worth more than 2 million dollars. SOUNDBITE 3 Neil Lane (man) jeweler (English, 14 sec): "These are the earrings that she wore, and a diamond ring. She also had a beautiful black gown , and she wanted to put diamond pins in the back. So it's hard to see but when she went down the red carpet, these pins where shimmering." Jewelry is just one aspect of a star-worthy impression -- stylists, hairdressers, and makeup artists all play their parts in a flawless appearance. Stella Kae is a celebrity makeup artist, and knows that the impact of a great look can last beyond awards night. SOUNDBITE 4 Stella Kae (woman) Makeup artist (English, 9 sec): "If you are on everybody's best dressed, best hairstyle, best makeup lists, it's definitely going to mean more job probably for that actress on the upcoming year." On Sunday, Stella will start her day at 5 a.m. and tend to several stars whose names she can't reveal. At $2,000 per session, it will be by far her biggest day of the year. SOUNDBITE 5 Stella Kea (woman) Makeup artist (English, 7 sec): "In one day, you can make your month. Maybe two months if you're lucky." The Academy Awards are expected to generate 130 million dollars for the city of Los Angeles. From movie studios to entrepreneurs, everyone wins on Oscar night.
