The world's biggest high-tech fair, the CeBIT, kicks off today in Hanover, with its trademark mixture of major tech innovations presented alongside head-spinning gadgets.

SCRIPT: Used by businesses, architects, and designers, the 3D printer for the home is this year's main attraction at the CeBIT high-tech fair in Hannover. Developed by a German company, the printer creates solid objects in plastic from a computer display, and comes with a price tag of 1500€. Pre-set designs are available online, but the printer's manufacturer's promote a 'do it yourself' approach. You can be individual, and you don't by mass products, production products, you just make them at home. So it's a kind of revolution." The CeBIT is the world's biggest high-tech fair boasting over 4,100 exhibitors from 70 countries. Designed for the elderly, this intelligent armchair registers the owner's weight, blood pressure, heart rate and posture - and for those with a few extra pounds to shed it can convert into a rowing machine. The idea is to do primary prevention, to activate elderly people in their all environment. To do sport, to be more active." Medieval books may seem out of place at a high-tech show. But, created by Germany's Fraunhofer Institute, the 3D interactive book explorer scans and displays books up to 1000 years old - the user can then scroll through and flip 360 degrees - all in 3D. SOUNDBITE 3 Paul Chojecki (man), Manager, Fraunhofer Institute (English, 26 sec): "This is a 3D Interactive book presentation software. With it we can, first of all, produce 3D Books out of two dimensions scans. And, after that, we can demonstrate this kind of books, we can present them interactively." Over 400,000 visitors are expected to attend the CeBIT this year, and with everything from 3d printers to the fair's trademark head-spinning gadgets there is something for everyone to enjoy.
