There have been very few people in Caledonia, particularly in the 19th century. We can estimate 40,000 to 50,000 Kanaks and there are 15,000 to 20,000 artefacts kept in museums and collections. It's difficult to access this art and to research these artefacts because they are scattered and hard to find." SOUNDBITE 2, Emmanuel Kasarh��ou, co-curator of exhibit (French, 27 sec): "These are objects that were not meant to be kept. That is precisely what is so unique about having this double perspective: from people who were interested in these objects, who collected them, with very different stories about sales, theft, exchanges.
