CREW CELEBRATING WITH CHAMPAGNE STORY: An Australian trimaran has sailed across the Tasman Sea from Sydney, Australia to Auckland, New Zealand in what is being called a new record. While the World Sailing Speed Record Council does not have an official trans-Tasman record, the fastest reported crossing five days, until Saturday (October 19) when Team Australia's Trimaran, KAS, reached Auckland in two days 17 hours after leaving Sydney. The team set off on the 1260 nautical mile journey from Sydney on Wednesday (October 16), aiming to complete the crossing in three days, despite a forecast of heavy weather. "The first night we had 45 knots of wind and probably about four-and-a-half, five-metre seas," skipper Sean Langman said. "Now I've got two world records racing for Team Australia as a Kiwi," said the crew's navigator, Josh Alexander, who is originally from Auckland. Team Australia's trimaran, a veteran of the Sydney to Hobart race, is nicknamed 'Big Bird' but also has another name. "It's actual registered name is 'K.A.S.', Kicking and Screaming because that was what happened when I told my wife I was buying it," Langman said. Langman is now pushing to get involved in an Australian bid for the America's Cup, led by Bob Oatley. "Certainly we'd throw our resources behind it if the Oatleys go forward with a challenge," he said.
