STORY: Chelsea virtually guaranteed their place in the knockout rounds of the Champions League after weathering an early storm to beat Schalke 04 3-0 and take a commanding lead in Group E at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday (November 6). Schalke started the brighter, but the match tipped Chelsea's way when Samuel Eto'o pounced to score after 31 minutes when goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand took too long to clear, allowing Eto'o to stick a boot in the way of the ball, which shot past the keeper and into the net. Eto'o made it 2-0 in the 54th minute with a well-taken goal after a swift break and a neat final pass from Willian. Substitute Demba Ba made it 3-0 with a mis-hit volley in the 83rd minute. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said his team showed character after a disappointing 2-0 to Newcastle at the weekend in the English Premier League. "It's nothing to do with we dropped this one or that one, it has to do with their mentality, and they were strong," he told reporters after the match at Stamford Bridge. "They start a bit nervous, they made a lot of mistakes, we lost a couple of balls in dangerous positions and we allowed them to counter-attack with some danger, they had two good situations, after that our team recovered the balance and we controlled the game." Mourinho had a special message for Samuel Eto's two-goal contribution after reuniting with the Cameroon striker with whom he worked with when he was the coach at Internazionale. The Portuguese dropped Eden Hazard from the squad after the Belgian midfielder missed a training session on Monday (November 4) but said the incident was over. Schalke's coach Jens Keller expressed his disappointment and regretted goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand's mistake which led to Eto's opening goal. "Its kind of like giving them a goal," he said before adding that Schalke still have hopes to progress to the knock out stage. "Well, the result was not so good for us, obviously, but its still in our own hands and we still have a good chance to qualify, so everything's still open for us."
