Dogs of Sochi arrive in U.S..

Ten displaced dogs from Sochi, Russia arrive at a shelter in Washington, D.C.. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.

The dogs of Sochi arrive in Washington. D.C.. The Washington Animal Rescue League partnered with Humane Society International and Humane Society of United States to rescue the ten displaced dogs. Now they have arrived at a Washington shelter, where expectations are high. (SOUNDBITE) (English) BOB RAMIN, CEO AND PRESIDENT, WASHINGTON ANIMAL RESCUE LEAGUE, SAYING: "We are very proud to have these dogs from Sochi. You know, I think they are going to be international ambassadors. They are going to really highlight the importance of sheltering." It was a long journey. (SOUNDBITE) (English) KELLY O'MEARA, DIRECTOR OF COMPANION ANIMALS AND ENGAGEMENT, HUMANE SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL, SAYING: "It is a tremendous process, unfortunately. It requires a tremendous amount of paperwork, vaccinations for all of the dogs, health certificates for them to have the paperwork that is needed over here, and the local organization on the ground, ProvoDog, was responsible for not only caring for these dogs but all of the logistics involved in getting all of that paperwork, so that these dogs could finally be here today." Thousands of stray Sochi puppies and dogs were displaced because of last month's Winter Olympic Games. These are the lucky ones. (SOUNDBITE) (English) WASHINGTON ANIMAL RESCUE LEAGUE WORKER MILES GRAY SAYING: "In a couple of days, they will be used to us. They will love us in a couple of days, I promise you." In the coming months, more of the Sochi dogs are expected to arrive in the U.S. where ultimately the hope is they will find a place to call home.
